Seven things you need to know if you are paralysed by fear and anxiety
It’s easy to let our past failures and fears and anxiety define us. We all have moments of anxiety and stress about what’s to come. But it’s important to remember that our past does not define us. Despite our fears, we can find the strength and ability to move forward successfully.
Fear and anxiety can be paralysing. They can prevent us from taking risks and pursuing our dreams. All too often, we let fear and anxiety control our lives, living in fear of failure. However, it is important to remember that fear is only as powerful as we allow it to be. What matters is how we deal with fear and anxiety.
Here are some tips for moving past your fear and anxiety:
-
Acknowledge your anxiety.
Don’t try to ignore it or push it away. Recognising that you’re feeling anxious can help you deal with the feeling more effectively.
-
Identify your triggers.
What situations or thoughts tend to make you feel anxious? Once you know your triggers, you can start working on avoiding them or managing them more effectively.
-
Identify your thoughts.
What is it that pops into your head at the time when confronted by tough times? How do you think that you’re out of your depth? Do you feel that you can’t handle the situation? Do you think that you cannot find the solutions that you need? Write your thoughts down so that you can clearly see them; when you do, they stop being automatic stuff running through your head.
-
Challenge your anxiety.
Once you know what your anxiety tells you, you can start challenging the thoughts and beliefs causing you stress. Are they really true? Are they helpful? If not, what thoughts do you want to use as an alternative?
-
Breathe.
When we feel anxious, our bodies go into “fight or flight” mode. This can make it difficult to think clearly and make decisions. Taking some deep breaths can help you relax and focus on the present moment.
-
Resist.
The constant chatter of thoughts in your head can create even more stress and anxiety. Resist the temptation to quieten those thoughts with alcohol or drugs. This will only temporarily relieve the situation, and the cost of these things will further increase any financial difficulties you are experiencing.
-
Talk to someone.
It can be helpful to talk to someone who understands what you’re going through and can provide you with strategies to overcome your situation. A counsellor can help you work through your anxiety and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
If we talk to friends or family going through the same thing, they can tell you what’s happening to them and may even make suggestions about what they have tried. But if they have not succeeded in overcoming their situations, they will not be able to help you and may leave you believing there are no answers. To change what has been happening over and over for you, you need to talk to someone who can give you answers from their experience of being in your situation and winning.
The next time you’re feeling afraid or anxious, remember that you have the power to choose how you react. Choose to face your fear head-on rather than letting it control you. Choose to believe in yourself and your ability to succeed.
Don’t let your fear and anxiety define you or hold you back.
With some effort and understanding, you can overcome your anxiety and stress. You are not alone.
