Coping with Change: What to do When Life is Out of Control

  • Coping with Change: What to do When Life is Out of Control

Coping with change is a fundamental requirement of life.  As the Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, “The only constant in life is change.” However, when everything around us seems to be changing, and nothing appears to be settled, it can be overwhelming and frightening.

The Challenges of Constant Change

When nothing seems settled, we often experience a sense of instability and insecurity. We might feel like we’re standing on shifting sands, unable to find solid ground. This uncertainty can lead to stress, anxiety, and even depression.

Our routines are disrupted, and we may feel like we’re losing control over our lives. We might have difficulty making decisions because we’re unsure about the future. We might also feel isolated and misunderstood, especially if others around us seem to be navigating change more successfully.

How Change Affects Us

Change can affect us both physically and emotionally. Physically, chronic stress and anxiety can lead to symptoms such as headaches, stomach problems, sleep disturbances, and a weakened immune system.

Emotionally, we might experience mood swings, irritability, sadness or hopelessness, and a lack of motivation or focus. We might also display these symptoms publicly, impacting our relationships and professional lives.

Strategies for Coping with Change

While coping with constant change can be challenging, some strategies can help us navigate through these uncertainties:

Acceptance: Accept that change is a part of life. This doesn’t mean you must like it, but accepting that things are changing can help you adapt more easily. Our initial reaction to change is to push it away or fight against it.

Self-Care: Prioritise your physical health by exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, and getting enough sleep. Physical health is important when dealing with change.

Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness techniques such as meditation or yoga. These can help you stay grounded and focused on the present moment, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety about the future.

Support Network: Reach out to friends, family, or a professional counsellor for support. Sharing your feelings with someone else can help you feel more understood and less alone. They will be able to see what is happening from a different perspective to you and that may also assist you.

Set Goals: Having something to work towards can provide a sense of purpose and direction. Start by setting small, achievable goals and gradually work up to bigger ones. Having no goals is like a boat without an anchor tossed about by the waves.

Flexibility: Try to stay flexible and open-minded. Instead of resisting change, see it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Positive Attitude: Maintaining a positive attitude can significantly affect how you cope with change. Try to focus on the potential positives that might come from the situation. A positive attitude doesn’t mean that things never go wrong, but it believes things go right more than they go wrong.

While it’s normal to feel overwhelmed when everything seems unsettled, remember that change also brings opportunities for growth and new experiences. With the right strategies and mindset, you can navigate through life’s uncertainties and come out stronger on the other side.
